Treasure Hunting

This is a great activity for the kids when the seasons are changing to help them see the differences, and find "treasures".

Gather these items and place in a lunchbox, tote bag or even a large ziploc bag:

*notebook for each child
*sharpened pencils
*crayons
*magnifying glass (plastic)

Instruct them to take notice what is around them outside. Early morning or early evening are always good times for this. Let each family member go into the yard or a park and see what they can find! If it's alive have them sketch it. If it's dried or something such as a stone or leaf let them keep it in their box. The notebook will become a journal of what they see or hear! The library will have nature books you can check out to look up the things they find. Also keep an eye out at garage sales and thrift stores for nature books. You would be surprised how quickly your "library" will grow.
